On the CPD group on LinkedIn there is a good discussion on the PI exam.
If you want the SIA PI licence IMHO it is best to wait for the SIA to come to a decision before paying for training.

Good discussion. Don`t make the same mistake as I did 12 months ago and pay for a PI course that effectively is worthless, although I did learn from it I can`t apply for the licence from it. Anyone who undertakes any form of Surveillance will need the licence.

This Level 3 Award for Professional Investigators is based on the SIA specifications of core competency training for Private Investigators. This six day course far exceeds the minimum requirements set by the SIA, which is a minimum of 39 guided learning hours.
The staff at ISS Training have been conducting surveillance and investigations for many years and the instructors teaching this course have a wealth of operational experience from the private sector and Police Service.
Topics will include:
Principles of planning and reporting investigations
Know how to establish the objectives and ongoing feasibility of an investigation
Know how to deal with actual or potential conflicts of interest
Know how to report and present the finding of an investigation
Principles of gathering and using information for investigations
Know how to research and analyse information in support of an investigation
Know how to interview people to gather information
Know how surveillance can be used to gather information
Understand how to maintain the security and confidentiality of information gathered.
Understand relevant Health and Safety issues.
Subject Matter and Content
This course not only covers the basic standards required to obtain a Private Investigators licence but also covers additional and useful skills to operate as an effective investigator. These topics are covered in some depth:
Time Frame
Licencing for PI’s is still ‘work in progress’ but the government has stated that Private Investigators wil have to be licenced by Autumn 2014. The SIA requirements to obtain a licence are:-
We will be conducting a 6 day course to meet these requirements.
Any previous qualifications that are security or investigative related will not be accepted by the SIA but you will need the Level 3 PI Award. However, if you feel competent or experienced, you will be permitted to just sit the assesment test after providing evidence of such work (to be clarified shortly).
We will also be conducting 'Assessment Days' where you will be able to undergo a period of revision and then sit the assessment in the same day.
We will be publishing further details for the Assessment Days in due course.
Course Costs & Funding
This one week course is held in Yorkshire and includes the provision of all learning materials. Accommodation is not included but we can recommend nearby guest houses.
If you are taking the Level 3 assessment, a fee of £50.00 is included for registration, assessment and certification.

This one day course is designed for those with experience working within the investigative, surveillance or enforcement sectors who wish to just take the assessment for the Level 3 Award in Professional Investigation, without completing the full course.

You will be notified of your results within one week of taking the assessment. You will then be able to apply for the SIA licence in accordance with their procedures.
The Assessment Day
Commencing at 9am in a classroom environment, all attendees will be required to prove identity by means of a passport or driving licence. Periods of revision on each main subject matter will be conducted, followed by a written assessment test taken late afternoon.
Course Location
This one day course is held in Yorkshire and London.
