Windows, Mac OS or Linux? Empty Windows, Mac OS or Linux?

Post by Space Coast 8/4/2014, 11:21

I know a lot of people who are obsessive about OPSEC and PERSEC to the point of OCD. Yet, they quite happily connect to the big bad world using a Windows PC or a Mac and think they are secure because they have an "Internet Security" package installed. They wouldn't dream of carrying secure information on paper, yet store information on "encrypted" USB drives formatted with FAT16 or FAT32 file-systems and use highly vulnerable iPhones.

I do not use Windows on a computer connected to a network, ever. I haven't done so since 1997. I use Linux on my desktop and laptop and my USB drives are formatted with a live system with data files encrypted. In effect I carry a desktop in my pocket.

Mac OS, is based on a similar OS to Linux - Free BSD. However, although it's a little more secure than Windows, Apple, in the misguided name of "ease of use", have compromised the inherent security of a UNIX based file-system and left it exposed to viruses and hacks.

Android (although it is based on a Linux kernel) isn't as secure as Linux, but it's way better than iOS. 2014 will see the release of Ubuntu Linux for mobiles. I already pre-ordered :)

I am interested in the thoughts of others on this subject.
