SECURITY GUARDS THWART STABBING ATTEMPT ON FINLAND PM: AP

It is unclear if the attack was politically motivated in a country in which the Euroskeptic "True Finn" group collected 19% of the vote in the last election, and in which at least 49% of the population does not want their country to fund any more European bailouts.

A government spokesman says that the PM CPT stopped a knife-wielding man from stabbing Finland's prime minister while he was campaigning for municipal elections.

Kari Mokko, a spokesman for Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen, said the man was stopped before he was able to reach the prime minister.

The attempted attack occurred in the southwestern city of Turku, where Katainen was campaigning ahead of Sunday's municipal elections.

The prime minister was not hurt.
The Prime Minister was taken out of the scene for a while, but he soon returned back.
