A New Era in Maritime Security?
Risks, rules and responsibilities

22-23 October 2012

In a world of shifting powers and newly emboldened non-state actors, this conference will assess current economic, security and political risks to international maritime security, and consider how these may play out in the future.

Senior international policy-makers, representatives from the private sector and expert opinion-formers will discuss how maritime security can be ensured, and consider the future balance between public and private sector roles in ensuring continued peace and security at sea.

What policies must be established to avoid confrontation over the sea?
How will growing territorial claims and disputes over the global commons of the high seas be resolved?
How should the international community manage current threats to maritime security – smuggling, terror, piracy?
Can the private sector take over some of the state’s roles in ensuring maritime security?
