The threat to the UK from International Terrorism is SUBSTANTIAL
The threat to Great Britain from Irish Republican Terrorism is MODERATE

Domestic:
Two brothers from London have admitted to conspiring to travel to a terrorist training camp in Syria. The Old Bailey heard that Hamza NAWAZ 23 and Mohommod NAWAZ 30, from Stratford will be sentenced on the 9th June. Mohommod also pleaded guilty to having rifle ammunition having been arrested at Dover after ammunition was found in their car.
British jihadists are the most bloodthirsty in Syria says rebel commander, Brigadier-General Abdulellah al-Basheer. He has also claimed that they also make up the largest foreign contingent of the Islamic extremist terrorist group The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The chief of staff for the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA), that opposes the Assad regime, said that the majority of ISIS fighters were from the UK. He has urged the UK to to send weapons to assist in the fight against this group. send weapons to assist in the fight against this group.

Northern Ireland and Eire:
The men found guilty of the murder of Constable Stephen Carroll in 2009 have lost their appeal against their convictions. Brendan McConville 42 and John Paul Wootton 22, were sentenced to life. The High Court in Belfast overturned their appeal stating that the original verdict had been correct. The appeal court identified that several others helped carry out the attack besides the actual persons who had fired the weapons, and that considerable logistic support would have been needed. As well as being found guilty of the murder, both men were convicted of possession of an AK47 rifle and ammunition with intent to endanger rifle. Wootton was further found guilty of attempting to collect information likely to be of use to terrorists.
An explosion has occurred at a hotel in Londonderry, after a masked man threw a device into its reception area. The Everglades Hotel, in the Prehen area of the city, was evacuated after the device was reported on Thursday night. The device exploded a short time later when army experts were working to make it safe. No-one was injured in the explosion but the reception area was badly damaged. A PSNI spokesperson praised the action of the hotel staff and police officers in quickly evacuating the hotel, and said it had ‘undoubtedly prevented a tragedy’.
A 21-year-old man from Londonderry has pleaded guilty to possession of guns and explosives. Nathan Hastings from Strathfoyle, was arrested after police stopped the car he was driving in April 2013. Officers found a pipe bomb, a pistol, ammunition and two modified blank-firing handguns in one of the cars. Hastings pleaded guilty after asking for the charges of possession of arms and explosives to be put to him again. He had previously given several media interviews on behalf of dissident republicans in Derry. Sentencing is on 27 June.
A 42-year-old man has been arrested by detectives investigating the murder of a man in a north Belfast park and a gun attack on a police patrol. Kevin Kearney's body was found in the park in October 2013. Two police vehicles were hit by shots from an automatic rifle on the Crumlin Road in north Belfast on 5 December. Both attacks were blamed on dissident republicans.
Two dissident republicans have failed to overturn their convictions for murdering police constable Stephen Carroll in Northern Ireland in 2009. PC Carroll was shot dead by the Continuity IRA in Craigavon, County Armagh, in March 2009. Three years later, the two republicans were found guilty at Belfast Crown Court of murdering the 48-year-old officer who died from a single gunshot wound to the head. PC Carroll was the first officer killed by republican paramilitaries since the peace process reforms that saw the Royal Ulster Constabulary replaced by the new-look Police Service of Northern Ireland in 2001.
Northern Ireland's first minister Peter Robinson has come under fire for defending a pastor who made controversial comments about Muslims. James McConnell of the Metropolitan Tabernacle in north Belfast reportedly told his congregation on 18 May that, "a new evil had arisen" and "there are cells of Muslims right throughout Britain". Speaking later, Mr Robinson said that pastor had been demonised because of his remarks, and that there "isn't an ounce of hatred in his bones". A delegation of Northern Ireland's Muslim leaders has accepted an apology from Peter Robinson over comments he made about followers of the religion.
Former Northern Ireland First Minister David Trimble (now Lord Trimble) has called for a fresh inquiry into allegations gardaí colluded in the IRA’s murder of a High Court judge. He said that the killing of Lord Justice Gibson and his wife Cecily should be re-examined as questions were raised about several IRA murders in a BBC investigation last week.
The Police Federation for Northern Ireland has lodged a formal complaint alleging senior commanders failed to take measures to protect its members during violent street disorder. The Federation said 820 officers were injured during riot situations in the region last year. Among claims outlined in the complaint were alleged delays in deploying water cannon and sanctioning the use of baton rounds when trouble escalated. Last year witnessed sustained bouts of loyalist rioting linked to a controversial decision to limit the flying of the Union flag on Belfast City Hall and after a contentious Orange Order march was prevented from passing a nationalist area in the north of the city. In previous years, police were attacked in similar fashion by republican rioters.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland’s new Chief Constable is to be George Hamilton, the current PSNI Assistant Chief Constable. He will succeed Matt Baggott, who announced in January that he would be retiring. Other applicants for the post included An Garda Siochana assistant commissioner Derek Byrne and Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Cressida Dick. Mr Hamilton has been a police officer since joining the RUC in 1985. His appointment has been welcomed by Justice Minister David Ford.
The security situation in Northern Ireland has notably improved over the last decade. For the period 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2014, the Police Service of Northern Ireland recorded 54 shooting incidents and 69 bombing incidents. This is 10 fewer shooting incidents and 25 more bombing incidents than in the previous year (2012/13). The combined numbers of shooting and bombing incidents have decreased in the last ten years with the lowest levels recorded during 2006/07 and 2007/08 before increasing again in subsequent years. During 2013/14, there were 70 casualties as a result of paramilitary-style attacks. This is seven more than the previous year and under half the number that occurred in 2009/10 (127 casualties). Twenty eight of the 70 casualties were the victim of paramilitary-style shootings while the remaining 42 were the victims of paramilitary-style assaults ... The majority of paramilitary style shootings carried out in recent years have been attributed to Republican groups whereas the majority of paramilitary style assaults conducted in the last ten years has been attributed to Loyalists. During the year 2013/14, 23.1kg of explosives was seized compared with 11.4kg in the period, 2012/13. Lastly, during the year 2013/14, 168 people were arrested under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act of which 32 were subsequently charged. The number of persons arrested was 11 more than the previous year (2012/13) however, the number of persons subsequently charged decreased from 50 to 32.
Five men are being questioned after a suspected dissident republican bomb plot was foiled near the border. The men, aged from their 50s to 70s, were detained on 25 May when a car carrying an improvised explosive, believed to be a home-made bomb in a beer keg, was stopped by armed gardaí. The arrests were made in Co Louth, just outside Dundalk and about 2km from the border with Northern Ireland.
A counterfeit operation was uncovered by Customs officers last week following the multi-million Euro IRA moonshine operation, as reported by The Sunday Independent. Among the items seized were 110,000 bottle caps and 400,000 fake labels for brands including Smirnoff, Stolichnaya and Glen’s, which were found in a shed in Kilcurry, Co Louth, as well as 500 cardboard boxes. A bottling plant, believed to be just part of the IRA’s illicit alcohol racket, was also discovered. The IRA’s distilling operations are believed to have begun as far back as the 1990s with it known to produce counterfeit vodka and whisky. Customs and police on both sides of the Border have known of the operation for many years, but only now have they been able to trace the plant.

International:
The main US political parties have clashed over the deal to swap five Guantanamo Bay detainees for a Taliban-held soldier, with Republicans warning it could put American lives at risk. Senator John McCain said the detainees, who were transferred to Qatar, were some of the "highest high-risk people". Afghanistan also attacked the deal, saying handing prisoners to a third country was against international law. Sgt Bowe Bergdahl, 28, was handed to US forces in Afghanistan on Saturday.
At least 14 people have been killed in a bomb attack on a bar that was screening a televised football match in north-eastern Nigeria, police say. The attack place in the town of Mubi in Adamawa state, close to the border with Cameroon. Adamawa is one of three states that have been placed under emergency rule because of an insurgency waged by Islamist Boko Haram militants. However, no-one has yet said they carried out the latest attack.
Plans are being discussed for hundreds of UK troops to possibly be deployed to Nigeria to help local forces in their battle against Islamist extremists Boko Haram. It is claimed that the Nigerian military is demoralised and outgunned by the terrorists, and plans may include for UK soldiers to go to Nigeria to provided specialist training for the Nigerian forces. Officials stress that the troops would not be involved directly in the hunt for the recently kidnapped 300 schoolgirls, or take an active combat role directly against Boko Haram. The United Nations has recently officially declared Boko Haram a terrorist group linked to Al Qaida.
A London hate preacher jailed after calling for 9/11-style attacks across Europe has sparked fresh outrage after defending the kidnapping of more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls. In videos posted online, Mizanur Rahman praises Boko Haram, the terrorist group behind the kidnapping, for angering the West and suggests it is “not necessarily a bad thing” if they kill non-Muslims.
The United States has said that it does not have information that would support Nigeria's claim that it knows the whereabouts of more than 200 kidnapped schoolgirls, and US and European officials voiced skepticism about the statement. Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff said last week that the country's military knew the location of the schoolgirls, abducted by the Boko Haram Islamic militant group on April 14. Five US and European security officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they had no credible information on the location of the girls and were skeptical that the Nigerian government knew where they were. Source A former Head of Counter Terrorism Bureau of the US State Department, Daniel Benjamin, has said the Boko Haram sect has overtaken the Taliban in Afghanistan as the deadliest terrorist group in the world. Source The United Nations has added the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, to its list of terrorist organisations formally recognised as being associated with al-Qaeda, according to a report by Defenseone.com. The listing puts Nigeria on the UN map of countries having an al-Qaeda affiliate.
In Tunisia, gunmen have killed four policemen during an attack on a government minister’s home, say the interior ministry. The minister Lofti Ben Jeddou was not at home at the time of the attack, which is being blamed on Islamist extremists. The extremist group Ansar al Sharia has emerged over the last few years with its violent attempt to impose Sharia law on Tunisia. Authorities are also concerned about the neighbouring conflict in Libya spilling over the border.
A Frenchman has been arrested on Friday in Marseilles over a shooting at the Jewish Museum in Brussels that left four people dead, reports say. Mehdi Nemmouche, 29, is being held on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise, sources told AFP. He was reportedly carrying a Kalashnikov rifle and a handgun similar to the ones used in the May 24 attack. Security was tightened at Jewish sites across Belgium following the killings. Mr Nemmouche, who is believed to be from the northern French town of Roubaix, is also suspected of having links to Islamists militants fighting in Syria. He was arrested at the Saint-Charlies train station in the southern French city of Marseilles on Friday on board a bus that was travelling from Amsterdam via Brussels, AFP news agency reports.
Forces loyal to a rogue officer have bombed government funded Islamist militia in the eastern city of Benghazi, Libya. Reports say that aircraft loyal to General Khalifa Haftar attacked a base of the Islamist February 17th Brigade, a prominent armed group in the area. He accuses the government of supporting terrorism which they deny. The government have classed it as an attempted coup. Libya is still in a state of flux three years after the fall of Gaddafi. With no real structure in place various factions continue to try to impose their control on the country, with almost daily assassinations, kidnappings and bombings.
The leader of Islamist militant group Ansar al-Sharia in the Libyan city of Benghazi has warned the US against interference in the country or it would face worse than the conflicts in Somalia, Iraq, or Afghanistan. Libya's young democracy is in turmoil three years after the NATO-backed war that ousted Muammar Gaddafi, with rival Islamist, anti-Islamist, regional and political factions locked in a complex struggle for influence. Ansar al-Sharia, listed as a foreign terrorist organization by Washington, was accused of orchestrating the 2012 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi in which US Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans died.
The radical Islamist preacher who was the founder of Al Muhajiroun has been arrested for allegedly supporting terrorism. The Syrian born cleric was banned from the UK for his views, and according to official sources was arrested in the mountains, south-east of Beirut. It is believed that Bakri has been supporting the Sunni opposition to the Assad regime. Last month saw him flee his home in Tripoli before he could be arrested by security forces on suspicion of involvement in the sectarian fighting. Anjem Choudary has called for his release claiming that the allegation of instigating unrest in Lebanon is ‘completely unfounded’.
An American carried out a [massive] suicide bombing in Syria on behalf of an al-Qaeda-linked militant group last weekend, apparently the first time a US citizen has carried out such an attack in the Syrian civil war, US law enforcement and counterterrorism officials told NBC News. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the suicide bombing and said they have
 identified the American.
President Obama may soon sign off on a project to train and equip Syrian rebels not affiliated with al-Qaeda, administration officials said. Officials speaking on condition of anonymity said the project would mean sending a number of US troops to Jordan that would help instruct carefully vetted members of the Free Syrian Army on tactics, including counterterrorism operations.
Iran's supreme leader has said that his country's struggle will only end when it defeats US-led oppression. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told members of parliament in Tehran that Iran must be armed and 'have the capability to defend itself' in a 'world full of thieves'. His comments came as negotiations with the international community over Iran's nuclear programme ran into a stalemate, with Tehran saying world powers were 'demanding too much'. 'Battle and jihad are endless because evil and its front continue to exist,' Khamenei told MPs, according to a translation by US news site The Daily Caller. “This battle will only end when the society can get rid of the oppressors’ front with America at the head of it, which has expanded its claws on human mind,
body and thought. This requires a difficult and lengthy struggle and need for great strides.”
President Obama has announced last week that he will leave 9,800 US troops in Afghanistan through much of next year and backed away from ending America's longest war until at least his final year in office. “It’s time to turn the page on more than a decade in which so much of our foreign policy was focused on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq,” Mr Obama said in a Rose Garden address.
Two Americans suffered light injuries when a US consulate vehicle came under attack in Afghanistan's western province of Herat last week. A US embassy statement gave scant details of the attack but an Afghan official said a rocket-propelled grenade had been fired at the vehicle.
The White House blew the cover of the top CIA agent in Afghanistan last weekend when the person’s name was included on a list given to reporters during a visit to the country by President Obama. The name was emailed by the White House press office to a distribution list of more than 6,000 recipients, mostly members of the US media.
The Russian Foreign Minister warned the Ukrainian people that they were, "in essence being pushed into the abyss of fratricidal war", this as [Ukrainian] government forces stepped up their operation against pro-Russian armed groups in the eastern region [and following fierce fighting in Donetsk airport that left about 50 dead]. His statement came as the Ukrainian Prime Minister called on Russia to block the border to Ukraine to prevent fighters from entering his country. He said that if Russian influence was eliminated, the crisis in the east of the country could be ended swiftly.
Chinese police claim to have thwarted a group conspiring to launch terrorist attacks. The plot relates to the western region of Xinjiang, which is currently the centre of a separatist struggle against the Chinese government. The arrests of five people came days after a deadly blast in the region’s capital Urumqi. The region is home to a large Muslim Uighur minority, where a series of attacks have occurred. Police claim to have seized 1.8 tonnes of raw explosive materials. The Beijing authorities blame these on Islamists and separatists from that area. Opposition elements cite Chinese repressive policies towards the Islamic population, and that such terrorism allegations lack genuine proof.
China sentences 55 people for terrorism related offences – The defendants have been sentenced for a range of terrorism, separatism and murder related offences at a stadium in the Xinjiang region. Three of these were sentenced to death.
Samantha Lewthwaite who is the widow of 7/7 bomber, Germaine Lindsay, has reportedly married a ruthless Somali warlord while on the run after ditching her ‘Suicide Brigade’ bodyguards. Sources claim the British fugitive has wed suspected warlord, Hassan Maalim Ibrahim, who is also known as Sheikh Hassan. He is a senior commander in the radical terror group al-Shabaab which is linked to al-Qaeda. Mother-of-four Lewthwaite, 30, originally from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, is said to be one of the leading players in Somalia's radical al- Shabaab group. The British-born Muslim convert is on the run after she was suspected of helping to coordinate last September's attack on a Nairobi shopping mall in which 67 people were killed including five Britons.
The Pope met with Israeli leaders President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the last day of his three day pilgrimage of the Middle East. Before this meeting, the pontiff stopped at a terrorism victims' memorial after criticism of his unscheduled stop for a prayer session at the West Bank's controversial separation barrier, praying against the wall that has come to symbolise Arab-Israeli division. At the memorial, Pope Francis put both hands on the neat stone and marble monument and bowed his head. "I pray for all the victims of terrorism. Please, no more terrorism," the softly spoken pope said at the memorial, which is engraved with the names of Israeli civilians killed mainly in attacks by Palestinian militants.
The new Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of cross-border terrorism and sought the speedy trial of those accused of involvement in the 26/11 terror strike on Mumbai, during his meeting with his Pakistani counterpart last week. In the meeting, Mr Modi reportedly underlined Indian concerns relating to terrorism. He said that Pakistan must ensure the speedy trial of the accused in the 26/11 Mumbai attack case and said that Pakistan must abide by its commitment to prevent its territory from being used for terror. The 2008 Mumbai attacks were twelve coordinated shooting and bombing terrorist attacks lasting four days across the city by members of Lashkar-e-Taiba. Ajmal Kasab, the only attacker who was captured alive, later confessed during interrogation that the attacks were conducted with the support of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (the ISI). Ajmal Kasab was hanged on 21 November 2012.
A court in Spain has convicted a Saudi man dubbed, ‘al-Qaeda's librarian’ of membership in a terrorist organisation and sentenced his to eight years in jail. The National Court, the top criminal court in the country, ruled that the Jordanian-born Saudi national "belonged to the propaganda apparatus of the Ansar al Mujahideen Network since 2006" which is "without a doubt" an "al- Qaeda satellite group". Almalki ran online forums linked to this group dedicated to "recruiting terrorists" and glorified Mohamed Merah, the self-proclaimed jihadist who killed four Jews,
including three children, and three soldiers in France in 2012, the court said in its written ruling.
Opening statements were given in the trial of a man accused of plotting a terrorist attack in Tampa. The trial of 27-year-old Sami Osmakac began in federal court in Tampa last week. An Assistant US Attorney said Osmakac planned to wreak havoc in Tampa by blowing up a car bomb outside an Irish pub and then using grenades and an AK-47 to take hostages at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino and demand the release of Muslim prisoners.
An Army judge has reset the start of the USS Cole terror trial for next year – 9 February. The delay has been attributed to the prosecutor’s effort to shield details of the CIA’s secret detention program. Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri is said to have been the mastermind of al-Qaeda’s 12 October 2000 suicide bombing of the warship, USS Cole that left 17 US sailors dead. He was detained in 2002 in Dubai and was taken to the Guantánamo Bay Navy Base, Cuba, four years later.

Cyber News:
The former "leader" of hacking group LulzSec has helped the FBI stop more than 300 cyber attacks since his arrest on hacking charges in 2011. The co-operation of Hector Xavier Monsegur has helped to prevent losses of millions of dollars, according to court documents filed by prosecutors. Monsegur will be sentenced next week for his role in major online hacking attacks. Prosecutors have recommended that he receives a reduced sentence. LulzSec was formed around May 2011 when Monsegur, aka Sabu, and 5 other members of the Anonymous movement joined forces.
Washington made it clear last week that China is America’s biggest cyber nemesis, at least in terms of the theft of US intellectual property. So who’s next? According to former Defence Secretary Robert Gates (who was also director of the Central Intelligence Agency in the first Bush administration), it is France — one of America’s closest allies. There are probably a dozen or 15 countries that steal our technology in this way,” Gates said in an interview the Council on Foreign Relations posted online last week. “In terms of the most capable, next to the Chinese, are the French — and they’ve been doing it a long time.”
Reports are breaking out that a hacker going by the name of Oleg Pliss, has begun taking iDevices and Macs hostage through a ransomware scheme that locks the said devices and displays an alert stating, “Device hacked by Oleg Pliss.” To have it unlocked, the user is told to send $100/€100 to an anonymous PayPal account. So far, only a few Australian users have been targeted but there is no telling what the hackers behind this ransomware will do next. They could be spreading their attacks across the US, Europe, and/or Asia..

And Finally ...
Muslim groups in Malaya have declared jihad on Cadbury after two of its products sold in predominately Islamic Malaysia were found to contain traces of pork. The discovery was made during a periodic check for non-halal ingredients in food products by the country’s health ministry, which confirmed the presence of porcine DNA in bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk, Hazelnut and Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond. Cadbury Malaysia, like most food makers in the country where Muslims make up more than 60 per cent of the population, has all of its products certified halal to conform with Islam’s dietary restrictions, one of which is a prohibition on pork. A news conference was held in Kuala Lumpur where the groups claimed that Cadbury had “crossed the line”. “They have betrayed us Muslims by putting haram elements in the foods we consume,” the leader of Malay rights group Perkasa, declared. The president of another Muslim rights group in Malaysia called for a holy war, or jihad, against the confectionery giant for attempting to “weaken” Muslims in Malaysia and said, “We need to unite, we must declare jihad.”
