Rafael Prieto, a Secret Service agent assigned to security detail under United States President Barack Obama, was found dead in his car.
According to authorities, Prieto's car was running and he apparently died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Currently, both the Metropolitan Police and the medical examiner are conducting an investigation to this death. It is strongly believed that Prieto decided to take his own life.
According to colleagues in the Secret Service, Prieto had a distinguished career within the ranks. Also, they add that Prieto was a colleague that was valued.
Also, reports say that Prieto is married with children. However, a secret about Prieto was revealed: he had a six-year extramarital affair with a Mexican woman. One of his colleagues revealed the secret due to the recent prostitution in Colombia scandal involving Secret Service which made the media headlines.
However, Prieto was never part of the scandal. In fact, Prieto was never in Colombia during the time which shows that he had nothing to do with it. But, Prieto's secret coming out could have been fallout from the scandal as a result. When the secret came out, Prieto became the focus of a new investigation on whether or not he violated agency rules.
If you are an employee with security clearance, you are obligated to disclose relationships with foreign citizens. This is a secret measure to make sure that the person the employee is in a relationship with is not a threat to the country's security.
Perhaps this is residual damage as a result of the Colombia scandal. Currently, the reasons behind Prieto's death are currently unknown at the moment. There are news sources that are calling it a suicide or an apparent suicide.
Outlets such as the Chicago Tribune, The Guardian, and The Inquistr say “apparent suicide.” Outlets such as New York Magazine and the National Journal say “commits suicide.”
