What is your opinion on the best Watch Strap?
(The watch strap has to be able to take a good beating and not get damaged by salt water (ie diving)

NATO straps: they have the extra layer to secure the watch from sliding too far on the strap. In practical terms, the second layer is for looks, as I've never seen a watch slide around on the strap. This second layer can easily be cut off with any pair of scissors, and then sealed with a lighter on the cut edge. NATOs also have smaller hardware than a Zulu, and this can be a consideration with smaller watches.
Zulu straps: they only have one layer of nylon, use a slightly heavier/thicker weave of nylon, and have larger hardware that is brushed. Again, the hardware preference can depend on the watch that it is going on.
5-ring straps: these are a combination of a NATO and a Zulu. They have two layers of nylon and an extra set of rings just like a NATO. However, they use the same nylon as a Zulu, as well as the larger, brushed hardware.

Re: What is the best watch Strap?
I've got the silicone strap on my Luminox, not the prettiest but practical. It has been in and out the sea with only a rinse to get the salt off to bring it back to new. The other good thing is it doesn't absorb water like leather or nylon.
Re: What is the best watch Strap?
Silicone is practical and does seem easier for the person going in and out of the sea.
I like the look of the Nato strap and people that have had both Nato and Silicone say the Nato is more comfortable.

Re: What is the best watch Strap?
I've had a NATO style strap but only a cheap one on a Timex watch I once had. I found that it absorbed a lot of sweat and started to pong so required washing regularly , maybe it was just me! As I say it was only a cheap one, the more expensive ones are probably much better quality.
Re: What is the best watch Strap?
Sabre, another thing to consider is durability, strength and most importantly the safety of the watch.
For people diving and maybe catching their watch on something or banging it, with a NATO strap there is no chance of it coming off and falling deep down.....

I have had leather, rubber, silicone, and Nato.
The best look I had was Nato, the most strength I had and watch safety was Nato, and exactly the same as you I found the watch took ages to dry after the sea or even a shower, if I then put on my suit after the shower the water would then be absorbed by my shirt sleeve, and same as you I found the Nato strap absorbs sweat, it was hard to clean as white bits would stick in it and it would go a little white with salt even after a good rinse, it stank as well after a few month.
So I guess the Nato option is great for divers as it gives security but it will need to be changed every 6 months.
You can buy them in batches on Ebay for cheap.
Re: What is the best watch Strap?
I was thinking, what is wrong with Croc Leather?
They don't seem to mind staying down under for long periods of time and they seem to dry off pretty quickly

Re: What is the best watch Strap?
A thing to consider is allergic reactions.
When I had rubber or silicone I would sometimes get red patches underneath the watch and I don't know where that is from but obviously from sweat.
Didn't have that with Nato, but an option I am considering is going for waterproof leather or croc leather.
Hirsch is a superb company and they specialise in top of the range leather straps that can be worn for diving.
A watch with a rubber or silicone bracelet can look pretty cheap and not so nice with a suite.
Whilst leather looks the dog's .......
And if you do SV as well as CP, leather may be a little more discreet than military style straps.

Re: What is the best watch Strap?
Some good points Ted, I have to have two watches as my Luminox does not look good with a suit and stands out a mile on SV.
You will have to post your thoughts if you get a croc strap (with pics!)
