What is PMR446 and is it worth using?
PMR446 is a licence free standard mandated for use in most countries throughout the European Union. It is regulated to 500mW (half a Watt) radiated power and uses a specific set of frequencies which are shared with all other PMR446 users.
You can buy the consumer variant of these radios in many electrical outlets such as Curry's and ARGOS for as little as £80.00 for 6 radios but this is false economy for the professional user as these radios are of generally poor quality and do not last.
Higher quality commercial offerings are available and may suffice in certain situations. But range is limited and you are liable to interference from all of the other people also using the limited number of frequencies available. As a quick fix, if nothing else is available, they will get you out of a communications black hole, but better to plan to take your own kit that you are used to using, and you know you can rely on.
