A man jumped on stage and pointed a gun at the leader of Bulgaria's ethnic Turkish party before security guards wrestled him to the ground during a televised conference.
Ahmed Dogan, the long-time leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) escaped unscathed - and it was not immediately clear why he had been targeted at the party congress in Sofia.
Television footage showed a man jumping out of the audience and interrupting a speech by 58-year-old Mr Dogan, who has led the party for almost a quarter of a century.
Security guards were seen beating and kicking the man.
The attacker was later escorted from the conference by security guards
"Ahmed Dogan is in good health. Everything is under control," MRF official Ceyhan Ibryamov told journalists.
Police said they had arrested a 25-year-old man from the Black Sea town of Burgas. They said the attacker was also carrying two knives.
The liberal MRF party represents ethnic Turks and other Muslims who make up about 12% of Bulgaria's 7.3 million population.
Mr Dogan is seen as one of Balkan country's most influential political figures. The MRF was a junior partner in the previous
Socialist-led cabinet.
In 1996, former prime minister Andrei Lukanov was found shot dead near his home in Sofia, though attacks on politicians are rare.

Re: Close Protection Fail -
It is being reported that the weapon jammed and didn`t fire. Very lucky for the VIP if this is the case!
Re: Close Protection Fail -
Everything seemed clumsy from start to finish.
First being let through to go on stage, then letting everyone in the crowd lynch him, not getting the principal away fast, even on the pic above he doesn't seem to be very under control....
His arms don't seem to be very controlled.
He should have been cuffed.

Re: Close Protection Fail -
Notice the gunman had some sort of ID/pass hanging around his neck. It will be interesting to see who he is and if the pass is genuine. A review of Security Procedure may be the order of the day.
It surprises me how he managed to get so close with a Firearm and the unbelievable `Reaction To Attack`! Surely he would have been shot dead the moment a gun was seen in his hand in some countries?

What a complete goat .......... Security was lapse there however we dont see the build up to the event. With a security pass or even could have been staff. No updates to prove. But c'mon CP team should have been all over him. The principal had to push him away. Jesus. FAIL.
Re: Close Protection Fail -
The firearm apparently was a Ekol Volga 9mm gas pistol.
Oktai Enimehmedov, 25, a Bulgarian national and ethnic Turk, from Burgas.
"Interior minister Tsvevtan Tsvetanov says Enimehmedov has criminal record for drugs possession, robberies and hooliganism."
Re: Close Protection Fail -
I can not believe the total inability of the team of not being able to restrain the perp, and the weapon was not secured.
